During his working visit to London, Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov held a number of meetings on the sidelines of the first ministerial meeting in the “Central Asia-United Kingdom” format.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Meredov held talks with Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, at the government residence, Lancaster House. The parties exchanged views on strengthening Turkmen-British ties, particularly in the areas of culture and education.
At a joint working lunch of the Central Asian foreign ministers, attended by the Duke of Edinburgh, the significance of the upcoming ministerial forum was emphasized as a key step in developing multilateral cooperation. Turkmenistan's strong interest in studying the English language and British culture was noted, as was the importance of educational exchanges, including through the Chevening program. Examples of cultural dialogue included the holding of a Scottish dance evening, "Ceilidh," in Ashgabat, the installation of a monument to William Shakespeare in the Turkmen capital, and the release of a BBC documentary about the leopards of the Kopetdag.
Meredov also participated in a meeting of Central Asian foreign ministers with Speaker of the British House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle, during which the Turkmen side expressed appreciation for efforts to strengthen interparliamentary ties. A separate meeting was held with members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cooperation with Central Asia, chaired by Pam Cox.
