The world's first total face transplant from a donor who voluntarily died by euthanasia was successfully performed at Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron Hospital. Before her death, the donor donated her organs, including her face, to patients in need, rg.ru reports.
The recipient was a woman who had lost her face due to a severe bacterial infection. Compatibility between the donor and patient was ensured based on several parameters: blood type, gender, and cranial anatomical characteristics. To ensure precise tissue matching, engineers first created 3D models.
The operation lasted about a day and required the participation of approximately 100 specialists. Surgeons gradually connected the smallest nerves and vessels to ensure not only the transplant's survival but also the preservation of facial expressions.
The patient has now been discharged home. Restoring her nerve function is taking a long time: according to doctors, she is gradually re-learning basic facial movements—blinking, speech, and smiling.
The clinic's donation coordinator, Elizabeth Navas, called the donor's decision an exceptional act of altruism. She said dedicating one of one's last wishes to another person is an act that evokes deep respect.
