On February 22, the closing ceremony of the XXV Winter Olympic Games took place in Verona, Italy. The ceremony took place at the historic Arena di Verona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 1st century AD.
The ceremony, dubbed "Beauty in Action," combined musical and artistic performances. For the first time in the history of the Winter Olympics, two Olympic flames were simultaneously extinguished—in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, where the competitions were held.
The ceremony included the traditional delegation parade: athletes from all countries entered the arena together, in keeping with a tradition dating back to the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. The awards ceremony for the winners of the women's and men's cross-country skiing marathon concluded the event.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry thanked Italy for hosting the Games, noting the warm welcome the Italian public gave to athletes from all participating countries.
