There are three days left until the start of the Winter Olympics in Italy

The XXV Olympic Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo will begin on February 6, 2026. As of February 3, there are three days left until the opening ceremony. The competitions will continue until February 22.

On June 24, 2019, at the 134th session in Lausanne, the International Olympic Committee announced that the XXV Olympic Winter Games would be held in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Sweden and Italy were in contention to host the Games after several countries, including Switzerland, Austria, Canada, and Japan, withdrew their candidacies.

This will be Italy's fourth Olympics. Cortina d'Ampezzo previously hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, while Milan is hosting its first ever Games. The country's last Winter Olympics were held in Turin in 2006.

The competition will be held in three regions: Lombardy, Veneto, and the provinces of Trento and Bolzano. The opening and closing ceremonies, as well as most of the ice competitions, will be held in Milan, while the alpine skiing events will be held in Cortina d'Ampezzo. In addition to the two main cities, competitions will also be held in Livigno, Anterselva, Bormio, Predazzo, Tesero, and Verona.

The program will feature 116 medal events, seven more than at the previous Winter Games in Beijing. Ski mountaineering, a sport that combines mountain climbing and skiing, is included in the Olympic program for the first time. Medals will be awarded in men's and women's sprints, individual races, and a mixed relay.

The Olympic mascots are two ermines: Tina, representing Cortina, and Milo, symbolizing Milan. The Games' motto is "It's Your Vibe."

More than 3500 athletes from 93 countries are expected to participate. Norway, Germany, and the United States are projected to be the medal favorites.
