Sydney closes 20 beaches after shark attacks

Twenty beaches in Sydney have been temporarily closed following several shark attacks in recent days, 9News reports.

The decision to close was made following an incident on January 19, when a shark, believed to be a bull shark, attacked an 11-year-old boy's surfboard on the city's northern beaches. The day before, on January 18, a 12-year-old boy was injured on a beach in Sydney's east. That same day, January 19, a shark bit a man in his 20s on the leg at North Steyne Beach in Manly.

The series of attacks occurred amid a recent storm and heavy rains that caused flooding in the city. Authorities urged vacationers to take precautions and stated that the beach closures would be reviewed regularly.

The beaches will remain closed until further notice.
