Ensuring environmental safety is one of the key principles of Turkmenistan's state policy.
Turkmenistan's environmental legislation aims to protect the environment from pollution, preserve the country's unique biodiversity and biosphere, and ensure the rational use of the country's land, water, and other natural resources, according to the website of the country's Ministry of Environmental Protection.
Turkmenistan has developed a "National Strategy to Combat Climate Change" and a "National Forestry Program of Turkmenistan." Based on the Constitution, the country has adopted laws "On Radiation Safety," "On the Protection of the Ozone Layer," "On Drinking Water," "On Chemical Safety," "On Waste," "On Protected Areas," "On Plant Protection," "On the Collection, Preservation, and Strategic Use of Genetic Resources of Cultivated Plants," "On Environmental Safety," "On Environmental Auditing," and "On Environmental Information." The laws “On Hydrocarbon Resources,” “On Specially Protected Natural Areas,” “On Flora,” “On Fauna,” “On Nature Conservation,” “On Environmental Analysis,” “On Atmospheric Air Protection,” as well as the Forest and Water Codes, were adopted in updated forms.
These laws are intended to strengthen the legal, economic and organizational foundations for environmental protection in the country, as well as to promote environmental safety, rational use of natural resources and their conservation.
Turkmenistan has extensive experience in cooperation with UN agencies and other international organizations in the field of environmental protection.
Currently, dozens of environmental programs and projects are being implemented in the country at the national and regional levels in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Industrial Development Program, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia, and other international organizations.
There are also public associations and organizations in the country dedicated to environmental protection and ecology. The largest public organization conducting large-scale information and educational work on environmental conservation and promoting state environmental policy is the Nature Conservation Society of Turkmenistan.
The main goal of environmental policy in Turkmenistan is the conservation of the country's resources, their efficient use, limiting disturbances to the ecological balance in the environment, preventing pollution and degradation of nature, ensuring environmental safety for people in society, free labor and recreation, and adequately satisfying the material and cultural needs of the younger generation. The successful implementation of economic reforms in Turkmenistan makes it possible to fully address the country's long-term environmental problems, improve the population's standard of living, and sustainably ensure environmental safety for citizens.
