On December 22, Yakutian settlements topped the global ranking of the coldest places on Earth. According to meteorological observations, the city of Pokrovsk became the absolute leader in low temperatures—the local weather station recorded minus 51,7 degrees Celsius, reports vc.ru.
The Sukhana weather station, located in the republic's Olenyok district, came in second place. The mercury there dropped to minus 49,4 degrees Celsius.
Such extreme temperatures are typical for the Yakut region during the winter. The Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is traditionally considered one of the coldest permanently inhabited territories.
