The capital of Turkmenistan has become one of 72 cities from 46 countries accepted into UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities. The membership certificate presentation ceremony took place in the Ashgabat mayor's office, the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reports.
UNESCO's decision recognizes the Turkmen capital's achievements in developing a lifelong education system and creating conditions for learning for citizens of all ages. Ashgabat is one of 11 capital cities to join the network this year, along with Cairo, Ankara, Lisbon, Riyadh, Hanoi, and Buenos Aires.
With the addition of new members, UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities has grown to 425 cities from 91 countries, reaching nearly 500 million people. The organization noted that 12 countries, including Turkmenistan, joined the network for the first time in 2025.
The Global Network of Learning Cities, established in 2013, unites communities where learning is integrated into everyday life – in schools, workplaces, libraries, museums, and public spaces. Participating cities create opportunities for all citizens, help them adapt to changing labor markets, promote literacy, support entrepreneurship, and develop skills for the digital transformation.
