Apple Inc. has no plans to comply with Indian authorities' order to pre-install a government app on devices, Reuters reports, citing sources. The company intends to communicate its position to the Indian government.
On December 1, 2025, Indian authorities privately requested smartphone manufacturers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on new devices. Compliance was given 90 days.
The Sanchar Saathi app allows users to report suspicious calls, block lost or stolen devices, and check smartphone serial numbers. According to the government, it's aimed at combating fraud. Users won't be able to disable or uninstall the app from their device.
According to Reuters, Apple does not comply with such requirements in any country, as they create security and privacy concerns. Company representatives plan to inform the Indian government of its refusal to comply, but do not intend to make public statements or take legal action.
It is currently unknown what sanctions Apple may face for failing to comply with the government's order.
