The Central Bank of Argentina has unveiled a commemorative silver coin dedicated to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a statement on the regulator's website.
The coin's reverse depicts the trajectory of Diego Maradona's legendary solo run that culminated in a goal against England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of this memorable event. The obverse depicts a ball passing through the coin, symbolizing "the passion for football that is so characteristic of Argentina," according to the description.
The coin is made of 925 sterling silver, weighs 27 grams, and has a diameter of 40 mm. The domestic mintage is 2500 pieces, each with a face value of 10 USD. Gold coins of a similar design are also issued for international circulation.
Argentina is the reigning world champion. The team won the title at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
