Since 2005, Turkmenistan, together with the UN system, has implemented 566 national and regional projects worth a total of 545 million USD. This was announced by Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov at a conference dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN.
"From 2005 (the beginning of the first cycle of the Turkmenistan-UN Cooperation Framework) to the present day, Turkmenistan, together with the UN system, has implemented and continues to implement 566 national and regional projects worth a total of 545 million USD," the head of the foreign policy department said.
Meredov emphasized that Turkmenistan firmly believes in the need to preserve the universal legitimacy of the UN and strictly adhere to international law. "We are convinced that any reform of the UN makes sense only if it is aimed at strengthening it and increasing its influence in addressing key global development issues," he noted.
The Minister emphasized that Turkmenistan is a party to 192 UN international conventions and aligns all its actions on the international stage with the strategic objectives of the United Nations.
A number of UN agencies are permanently active in the country, including the United Nations Development Programme, the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations Children's Fund, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, and others. "With their assistance, dozens of significant programs and projects are being implemented in various sectors of Turkmenistan's economy, social sphere, and environment," Meredov said.
The Foreign Minister stated that the priority task of interaction with the UN in the coming period is to ensure lasting peace and security. He added that Turkmenistan is using political and diplomatic tools to achieve this, primarily the potential of neutrality and preventive diplomacy.
