Turkmenistan is proposing the creation of a specialized regional center for climate change technologies and a center to combat desertification in Central Asia. This was announced by Magtymguly Akmuradov, Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Environmental and Water Diplomacy, in his speech at the pre-conference session of the International Conference and Exhibition "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2025" (OGT 2025).
"In his address at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, our esteemed President Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted that Turkmenistan will continue its efforts to establish a specialized regional center for climate change technologies in Central Asia," the diplomat stated. He added that the center's activities will focus on introducing new technologies for climate change adaptation and mitigation, as well as developing international cooperation in environmental innovation.
Akmuradov noted that the center could become a platform for systemic and scientific-practical dialogue, bringing together Central Asian countries, specialized UN agencies, and the international scientific community to transfer climate technologies. "I think that this center will begin operating very soon, perhaps even before the end of the year," he added.
The second initiative envisions the creation of a regional center to combat desertification for Central Asian countries. As the Foreign Ministry adviser explained, this center will operate with the support of relevant UN agencies and will become an important platform for coordinating efforts in this area.
Furthermore, Turkmenistan intends to promote the development and adoption of regional conventions on the Amu Darya and Syr Darya river basins. "We hope that these international legal documents will provide a solid foundation for developing coordinated approaches to the sustainable, equitable, and effective management of transboundary water resources in Central Asia," Akmuradov emphasized.
The diplomat noted that recent scientific research involving leading experts from the region has demonstrated the need for a separate basin approach for the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, as a single solution for all water basins is impossible.
