The “Turkmengaz” State Concern reduced methane emissions at its facilities by 30% from June 2024 to September 2025 through the use of satellite data and international cooperation. This was announced by Muhammetberdi Byashiev, Head of the Environmental Protection Department at the Natural Gas Research Institute of the “Turkmengaz” State Concern, at the OGT 2025 pre-conference session in Ashgabat.
"An analysis of satellite data for the period from June 2024 to September 2025 showed that methane emissions, according to conservative estimates, decreased by 30% at the facilities of the “Turkmengaz” State Concern," Byashiev said.
According to him, in 2023, satellites detected 20 methane super-emitters, nine of which were located at “Turkmengaz” facilities. "Currently, according to satellite data provided under the MARS program, we have virtually no super-emitters," he noted.
Byashiev emphasized that obtaining satellite data allowed for prompt leak repairs. "Management has placed this under special control, and leaks are being repaired locally within two to three days using our own resources," the specialist added.
A representative of Turkmengas expressed gratitude to the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for the MARS program, which provides satellite data on methane emissions.
Within the framework of the European Union's "Green Development of Turkmenistan" project for 2024-2028, an information and analysis center equipped with modern computers and IT technologies has been established at the Natural Gas Research Institute. Measuring instruments for greenhouse gas monitoring are expected to arrive soon.
Byashiev spoke at the pre-conference session ahead of the 30th International Conference and Exhibition "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2025." As previously reported by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Batyr Amanov, over 70 foreign companies, approximately 30 local enterprises, and private entrepreneurs have registered to participate in the event. Approximately 1,400 delegates are expected to attend the conference. The organizers are the state-owned concerns “Turkmengaz”, Turkmennebit, and the state corporation Turkmengeologiya, in conjunction with the Turkmen Energy Forum.
