On October 17, a gala reception was held at the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Moscow to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality, the International Year of Peace and Trust, the 80th anniversary of the UN, and the conclusion of the UN Friendship Games 2018.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the event was organized in cooperation with the UN Information Centre in Moscow.
In his address, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the Russian Federation E.M. Aydogdyev noted that Turkmenistan, adhering to the principles of neutrality, consistently advocates for dialogue, cooperation, and the strengthening of peace. Today, the country makes a significant contribution to the global movement for security and sustainable development, reaffirming its commitment to the ideals of the UN.
For eight decades, the UN has remained the most important and unique platform for dialogue between countries, and over three decades, Turkmen neutrality has become a significant factor in strengthening peace and security in the region.
As noted, the UN Friendship Games 2018, a sports tournament held from August 4 to October 12, was held to commemorate these significant events in 2025. Teams from embassies, consulates, and other foreign missions in the Russian Federation, as well as the UN Information Centre in Moscow, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MGIMO University, the Model UN team, and students and pupils from sports schools participated in the tournament.
The speakers noted that, at Turkmenistan's initiative, the UN Friendship Games—sports competitions for representatives of diplomatic missions and staff of the UN Secretariat and agencies—were held for the first time in April 2024. On September 6, 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution submitted by Turkmenistan and India, noting the potential role of the UN Friendship Games as a platform for "sports diplomacy" and calling for them to be held annually.
Those gathered were shown a video summary of the sports tournament, which included successful competitions in chess, football, and tennis. It became a powerful symbol of solidarity, peace, and trust, demonstrating that friendship, fair competition, and the pursuit of common goals can make our world a better place.
The awards ceremony for the sports tournament winners took place to thunderous applause.
The event featured performances of Turkmen national songs, and, in keeping with tradition, all guests were offered delicacies of Turkmen cuisine, the source noted.
