The UNESCO Executive Board has nominated former Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled El-Anani for the post of Director-General of the organization. This was announced on UNESCO's official website.
Following the vote, the Executive Board members supported the candidacy of the Egyptian representative. The final decision on the appointment will be made by UNESCO Member States at the General Conference, scheduled for November 6 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
If approved, al-Anani will take up his duties as CEO in mid-November, replacing Audrey Azoulay.
Khaled al-Anani was born on March 14, 1971, in Giza. He is an Egyptologist and politician. Since 2016, he has served as Egypt's Minister of Antiquities, and from 2019 to 2022, he headed the country's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
