The Turkmenistan Sambo team won eight medals at the World Championships among boys, girls, and juniors, which concluded on October 5 in the Indonesian city of Bogor.
Turkmen athletes won two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals. Islam Hemrayev (71 kg junior combat sambo weight class) and Alihan Aydogdyev (58 kg junior combat sambo weight class) became world champions.
The final bout in the 58 kg category between Aydogdyev and Russia's Artem Nesterov was cancelled due to an organizational error: the local organizing committee moved the finals' start time an hour earlier without notifying all participants. International Sambo Federation President Vasily Shestakov decided to recognize both athletes as winners and award them gold medals. The decision was supported by the national delegations.
Silver medals were won by Rasul Dzhabrailov (up to 64 kg, combat sambo, juniors), Malikberdi Begiyev (up to 88 kg, combat sambo, juniors), and Ykbal Saparova (up to 50 kg, sport sambo, juniors). Bronze medalists were Ilshat Dovranov (up to 58 kg, sport sambo, juniors), Mahriban Palvanova (up to 59 kg, sport sambo, juniors), and Annamuhammet Annamuhammedov (up to 64 kg, sport sambo, juniors).
The tournament was held in Indonesia for the first time. 371 athletes from 34 countries participated. Medals were awarded in sport and combat sambo in the 16-18 and 18-20 age categories.
