Turkmen boxer Hangeldy Lukmanov won the first medal for his country at the III CIS Games, which are taking place in Azerbaijan.
In the quarterfinals of the 52 kg weight class, Lukmanov defeated Belarusian athlete Kirill Leichanok. In the semifinals, the Turkmen boxer lost to Azerbaijan's Ali Abasli and, according to tournament regulations, was awarded the bronze medal.
A year ago, 16-year-old Lukmanov competed in the Asian Junior Boxing Championships and was considered one of the favorites in the 52 kg weight category.
The boxing competition is taking place at the Yevlakh Olympic Center. Turkmenistan is represented by eight boxers as part of the 56-member national delegation, which includes 36 athletes.
The 3rd CIS Games are being held in eight cities across Azerbaijan, with athletes under 23 years of age representing 13 countries, including the CIS, Cuba, Kuwait, Pakistan, Oman, and Türkiye. A total of 1624 athletes have entered, competing for 246 medal events in 23 sports until October 8.
At the previous Games in Belarus in 2023, the Turkmenistan team won 3 silver and 15 bronze medals.
