Indonesian authorities plan to fully complete the relocation of the country's capital from Jakarta to Nusantara by 2028. This was announced by the head of the presidential administration, Muhammad Kodari, who emphasized that by that date, buildings for all branches of government—the executive, legislative, and judicial—will be constructed.
According to him, only by accommodating all key government institutions in the new capital will it be able to fully function as the country's center of government. Construction will be completed in accordance with the instructions of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
The idea of relocating the capital was proposed by former head of state Joko Widodo in 2019. The project was originally scheduled for completion by 2024, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nusantara is being built on the island of Kalimantan, and approximately 32 billion USD has been allocated for the megaproject.
In July 2024, Joko Widodo spent his first days in office in the new capital, but soon returned to Jakarta. His successor, Prabowo Subianto, stated his intention to complete the project and relocate all government bodies to Nusantara.
