The ancient fortress of Amul, on the right bank of the Amu Darya, is widely known as a historical monument - an important trade center of the Great Silk Road.
The fortress is located on the territory of the present city of Turkmenabat in the Lebap velayat of Turkmenistan.
The ancient city was a large square fortress made of mud bricks, surrounded by a deep moat filled with water. Inside the fortress there were squares, military dormitories, food warehouses, residential buildings and a magnificent palace. The location on the river bank made the city very convenient for both trade and defensive purposes.
Important trade routes of the Great Silk Road passed through the fortress. In addition, roads to Iran and Eastern Europe went from here.
The inclusion of the Amul fortress, located on the route "Great Silk Road: Zarafshan - Karakum Pass", in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024 confirms its significance in world culture
Currently, the territory of the fortress is protected by the state as a historical and cultural monument.
