A magnitude 6,1 earthquake struck Türkiye's northwestern province of Balikesir on Sunday, which left one person dead and 29 injured, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said at a press conference in Balikesir, Xinhua reported.
According to the minister, the victim of the natural disaster was an 81-year-old man. The condition of the victims is assessed as stable - none of the 29 injured are in critical condition. Search and rescue operations in the affected region have been completed.
The earthquake, which was recorded at 19:53 local time, caused material damage to the region's infrastructure. In rural areas, 16 buildings collapsed, of which 12 were abandoned buildings.
The tremors caused panic among local populations across the region. Türkiye is located in a seismically active zone and is regularly subject to earthquakes of varying intensity.
