The proportion of the world's population suffering from undernourishment decreased to 673 million people (8,2% of the world's population) in 2024 from 8,5% in 2023. This is stated in the report on the state of food security and nutrition in the world, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN.
However, this positive trend has not affected all regions. As the document notes, the positive trend “contrasts sharply with the steady increase in the number of hungry people in Africa and Western Asia.”
In African countries, the proportion of the population suffering from hunger in 2024 exceeded 20% and amounted to 307 million people. In the Western Asia region, this figure reached 12,7%, which corresponds to more than 39 million people.
According to the report's forecasts, 512 million people worldwide will suffer from chronic malnutrition by 2030. At the same time, almost 60% of the hungry will be in African countries.
For reference: in 2022, the share of people suffering from hunger was 8,7% of the world's population.
