At the ninth session of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan of the seventh convocation, a number of bills were adopted, including a new version of the Civil Code of the country and a law on the creation of a Unified State Register of Voters. The laws were developed as part of a comprehensive program to modernize the legal framework of Turkmenistan, the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reports.

The main document of the meeting was the draft law "On the approval and implementation of the Civil Code of Turkmenistan" in a new version. As noted in the parliament, in the quarter century since the adoption of the previous version of the code, the country has gone through several stages of development, which required the improvement of the legal framework.

The draft of the new code was developed by specialists from Turkmen ministries and departments together with German experts. The document includes a separate chapter regulating charitable activities, as well as a section on international private law for relations involving foreign citizens and legal entities.

The structure of the code has been brought into line with the current law “On legal acts”, and its provisions have been modernized in accordance with the Constitution of Turkmenistan and international legal norms.

The deputies also adopted the law "On the Unified State Register of Voters", prepared by the Mejlis jointly with the Central Commission for Conducting Elections and Referendums. The document provides for the creation of a centralized digital system for recording citizens who have the right to vote.

The new law is aimed at increasing the efficiency of electoral processes within the framework of the implementation of the “Concept for the Development of the Digital Economy in Turkmenistan in 2019-2025” and the corresponding state program for 2021-2025.

The meeting also considered and adopted amendments to the laws “On the Internal Affairs Bodies of Turkmenistan” and “On the Customs Service”, as well as additions to the Customs Code of the country.

All bills submitted for consideration were unanimously approved by the deputies. Representatives of relevant ministries, departments and the media took part in the meeting.
