British scientists have made a breakthrough in long-term data storage by recording the human genome on an innovative 5D crystal. This technology, developed at the University of Southampton under the leadership of Professor Peter Kazansky, promises to preserve information for billions of years, TASS reports.

The 5D crystal can hold up to 360 terabytes of data, including the full structure of human DNA. What makes this carrier unique is its incredible resistance to extreme conditions: it can withstand temperatures up to 1000°C, direct impacts, and cosmic radiation.

Researchers see potential in this technology for preserving humanity's genetic heritage in the event of global catastrophes. It could also be used to create an archive of the genomes of endangered plant and animal species.

The development of 5D crystal began in 1996, and the first demonstration sample was created in 2010. The name “5D” reflects the method of encoding information: three spatial coordinates and two optical parameters are used.

In 2014, the invention was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the most durable data storage material, highlighting its unique properties and potential for long-term preservation of humanity's most important information.
