In accordance with the new research, scientists have discovered more than 5,000 new types of viruses in the world-wide ocean.

For the research published by the Science journal, specialists had analyzed 35 000 water samples, taken from world’s oceans. The scientists were looking for RNA-viruses, which also include the notorious coronavirus. Thanks to genetical analyses, the researches discovered a huge variety and proposed doubling the number of taxonomic groups needed to classify RNA-viruses.

As per ferra.ru publication, scientists used machine learning in order to analyze the sequences. As a result, they were able to identify nearly 5500 new RNA-viruses. In accordance with the opinion of scientists this research helped to trace not only the origin of viruses, but also the origin of life on Earth broadly.
