Following the midterm elections on November 3, the U.S. Democratic Party has gained control of both chambers of Congress: the House of Representatives and the Senate. According to an estimate by NBC News, the Democrats will secure at least 259 seats in the House. The official count is not yet complete.
As a result, President Donald Trump will spend the remaining two years of his term working with a Congress in which the opposition holds the majority. This new majority will have the opportunity to influence the legislative agenda, conduct congressional investigations, and participate in the confirmation of appointments.
Commenting on the results, Trump stated that the Republicans lost because he himself was not on the ballot. He noted that he had expected a better outcome. Among the factors that influenced the voting results, the president cited the performance of certain candidates and rising fuel prices.
In his dealings with the incoming majority, Trump combined a willingness to cooperate with a firm stance. He stated that he would likely "find common ground" with the Democrats, provided they do not act destructively, while also noting his veto power. He added that the Democratic Party would not survive an attempt at impeachment.
In a post on the social media platform X on November 4, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance linked the defeat to the war. "The reason we lost is the war," he wrote, adding that the president himself had said as much the day before. Furthermore, he cited the rising cost of living and inflation as additional factors contributing to the defeat.
