Ronaldo released a statement outlining his version of the conflict with Jesus

41-year-old Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has released a statement outlining his version of the conflict with the team's head coach, Jorge Jesus. According to the footballer, the 72-year-old manager broke his word twice. Ronaldo also revealed eight points that, he claims, had been agreed upon for the press conference ahead of the match against Denmark.

Tension between the player and the coach arose after the Nations League match against Norway, in which Ronaldo did not take the field and subsequently missed team training. According to media reports, Jesus initially did not plan to field the forward in Oslo but later stated he would give him about 30 minutes of playing time. The match ended in a 2–1 victory for Portugal.

At the pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Denmark, Jesus stated that Ronaldo would not be in the starting lineup and that lineup decisions are made solely by the coach. The coach also acknowledged having previously told the player he would likely feature in the match against Norway, but he did not apologize for doing so.

After this press conference, Ronaldo left the national team camp in Copenhagen. In his initial statement, he wrote that he had made the decision following the coach's press conference and a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation. He had promised to eventually tell the Portuguese the truth about the reasons for his departure. According to Marca, Jesus and federation chief Pedro Proença went to the airport to try to convince the player to stay, but he did not change his decision.

Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, a close associate of Ronaldo, claimed on “El Chiringuito TV” that Jesus apologized to the player during a private meeting and promised to publicly admit his mistake, yet instead defended his authority at the press conference. Jesus himself maintained that he had done nothing wrong.

The Portuguese national team won the match against Denmark 4–2. Following Ronaldo's departure, the number 7 shirt passed to Rafael Leão, while Bruno Fernandes took the captain's armband. Jesus promised to provide more details about the situation after the international break.

Ronaldo has played for the Portuguese national team since 2003 and holds the team record, with 234 appearances and 146 goals to his name. His future plans regarding the national team remain unknown.
