Typhoon “Dujuan” (in Japan - Typhoon No. 25) approached the Pacific coast of the country on Monday, September 21, bringing heavy rains and strong gusts of wind, the “Kyodo” agency reports.

The cyclone is expected to pass near the Boso Peninsula, where the greater part of Chiba Prefecture—located east of Tokyo—is situated. Torrential rains are forecast not only for Chiba but also for neighboring areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned of a landslide risk on Izu Oshima, one of the largest islands in the Izu archipelago, located approximately 100 km from Tokyo. A Level 5 landslide warning is in effect for the northern part of the Izu Islands, while a Level 4 warning applies to other areas of the Kanto region, reports The Japan Times.

At around 12:00 local time (approximately 06:00 Moscow time), “Dujuan” was located 80 km west of Hachijo Island and moving northeast at a speed of about 25 km/h. Wind gusts reached 198 km/h. By 4:00, the center of the typhoon was located approximately 130 km southeast of the city of Katsuura in Chiba Prefecture. The central pressure was 960 hPa, with maximum sustained winds of 40 m/s and gusts reaching 55 m/s.

Since Saturday, some areas of the Izu Islands, Chiba Prefecture, and other parts of the country facing the Pacific have received over 300 mm of precipitation. The JMA forecasts that up to 400 mm of rain could fall in the Kanto region and the Izu Islands by 6:00 on Tuesday. The agency noted that total rainfall by Tuesday could exceed the average monthly amount for September.

Due to the typhoon, sections of highways in the region have been closed, and delays and cancellations are expected for high-speed trains on the Tokyo–Osaka route. Railway companies in Tokyo and neighboring regions have suspended service on some lines. Tokyo authorities have ordered the closure of Ueno Zoo and the Tokyo Sea Life Park aquarium.

On Monday, at least 275 flights were canceled in Japan: Japan Airlines canceled 120 domestic and 15 international flights, All Nippon Airways canceled 140 domestic flights. More than 4 thousand households in Chiba were left without electricity. One of the largest video game exhibitions in Tokyo closed early. Organizers of the Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture have postponed the show jumping (eventing) competition to Tuesday.

According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, one person died and another sustained minor injuries in Miyazaki Prefecture. Evacuation orders have been issued for several areas. The severe weather coincided with "Silver Week"—a five-day holiday period running through Wednesday.

According to meteorological forecasts, the typhoon will move along the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region and weaken by September 23, transforming into an extratropical cyclone east of Hokkaido.
