The State Association of the Livestock and Poultry Industry of Turkmenistan, in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is implementing a project to develop a national strategy for the registration and traceability of farm animals. This work is being carried out under a previously signed agreement between the parties.

The "Sha Yoly" livestock complex, part of the Ahal velayat State Association of the Livestock and Poultry Industry, has been selected as the pilot site for the project. The tagging and microchipping of young cattle are being carried out there in stages; the second phase of equipping the animals with electronic chips is currently underway.

The project aims to enhance the effectiveness of animal health monitoring and disease prevention, improve the quality of veterinary services, and strengthen the country's food security. A distinct task is to ensure the traceability and verification of the origin of livestock products, which should facilitate closer integration of the sector with other areas of agriculture.

The identification system is a digital platform that consolidates animal data into a unified database, thereby streamlining operations for veterinary services, relevant government agencies, livestock associations, and farms. Similar platforms are already in use in a growing number of countries worldwide.

According to available information, there are plans to eventually extend the project to all livestock complexes in Turkmenistan.
