On August 28, 2026, the Chinese company EHang conducted the maiden public flight of its flagship model, the EH216-S, an unmanned electric air taxi, at the Cyberport technology park in Hong Kong. The vehicle is an eVTOL (extreme takeoff and landing) aircraft.

The tests were conducted in partnership with local transport operator Kwoon Chung Bus Holdings, according to the South China Morning Post. According to the publication, the company plans to purchase 30 air taxis from EHang and use some of them for passenger and logistics transportation in Hong Kong.

During the demonstration, the EH216-S carried not a human, but a humanoid robot, completing several flights along predetermined routes. Several more similar demonstrations will be held at Cyberport until August 30.

The EH216-S is designed to carry two passengers for a range of up to 30 km and can reach speeds of up to 130 km/h. In the spring of 2025, the Civil Aviation Administration of China issued EHang an air operator certificate, allowing it to conduct commercial flights without a pilot in the cockpit.

As the Global Times reported in March 2026, the company already has over 40 takeoff and landing sites. EHang plans to launch a full-fledged urban air taxi network by 2028.

Other companies are also developing air taxis. In April 2026, Joby Aviation conducted its first test flight between the airport and Manhattan in New York City. Earlier, in February, the company announced the launch of an electric air taxi in Dubai in partnership with Uber.
