A Maine Coon named Erebus Anomaly from Wisconsin, USA, set a new Guinness World Record for having 29 toes. The previous record of 28 toes stood for over 20 years.

According to The Guardian, the unusual number of toes is due to a genetic condition called polydactyly, which is common in Maine Coons. The kitten was born in March with eight toes on one paw and seven on the others.

At an early age, the animal suffered from severe pneumonia and was in critical condition, but subsequently made a full recovery. X-rays taken to confirm the recovery were later used in the documentation for the record.

Guinness World Records officially registered the record on May 13. The kitten's owners stated they have no plans to rehome him.
