Legendary American country singer Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80 in Nashville, Tennessee, after a short battle with cancer, the BBC reported.

The singer's death was first announced by her nephew, Brian Seaver, in a video message posted on social media. "Dolly lived in the light and is undoubtedly in the arms of Jesus," he said, adding that the artist "opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians, and dreamers from all walks of life."

In a statement, Parton's press office said the global icon, singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright, and author died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. The statement also described her creative and human legacy as a source of inspiration for generations of artists and fans.

Parton was born on January 19, 1946, to a poor family in the mountains of East Tennessee and, over a career that spanned seven decades, became one of the most recognizable figures in American music history, famous for hits including "Jolene." In addition to her music career, she is known as a film actress, founder of the Imagination Library charity program, and owner of the Dollywood theme park.

US President Donald Trump commented on Parton's death, calling her one of the greatest country music artists of all time. He ordered American flags across the US to be flown at half-staff for one week as a sign of respect.

Parton's husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, died in March 2025 at the age of 82.
