A 71-year-old American man shared how changing careers improved his physical and mental health

Robert Solomon, a 71-year-old former technical support and building management professional, is now an assistant buyer in the produce department of an independent grocery store in New York City. He says it's the best job he's ever had.

Solomon began working in the grocery industry during the pandemic, when his primary job was cut, and he took a job as an assistant at a food cooperative. After completing this project, he permanently transitioned to food retail in 2022.

The workday begins early—around 5:30–6:00 a.m.—with stocking the merchandise and preparing the sales floor. Solomon notes that the physical labor requires concentration and brings him emotional satisfaction.

Before that, he had several careers: he worked as a painter, a handyman, a cabinetmaker, and even sold energy-efficient lighting. He earned his university degree at age 46 through independent study, crediting his life experience.

According to Solomon, despite the physical strain, the new job has had a positive impact on his well-being: he notes improved physical fitness and greater calm.
