China's Geely Automobile plans to begin producing cars at Volvo's European plants starting in 2028, according to the company's chairman, An Conghui, as reported by CarNewsChina.

According to Geely's CEO, Volvo's European plants will produce the company's luxury cars. The company did not disclose the specific plants or countries where production will take place.

CarNewsChina speculates that these could be models from the Lynk and Zeekr brands, which are also owned by Geely Automobile. Specifically, the publication suggests local production of the Lynk & Co 900, Zeekr 9X, and Zeekr 8X crossovers.

Volvo currently has two operating factories in Europe—in Sweden and Belgium. Additionally, a new electric vehicle production facility is under construction in Slovakia, scheduled to open in 2027. Geely has not yet specified which sites it will use.

In July 2026, Geely Automobile also entered into a partnership with Ford Motor. The companies will establish a joint venture to produce passenger cars of both brands for the European market. Geely will also be able to use Ford's plant in Spain to produce two electric vehicle models.

Based on the results of the first half of 2026, Geely Holding Group ranked seventh among the world's largest automakers by market share, with 4,6%. The top three were Toyota (11%), Volkswagen (8,1%), and Hyundai (7,6%).

Geely acquired Swedish automaker Volvo in 2010 for 1,8 billion USD.
