National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov sent a congratulatory message to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov on the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the resolution "Year of International Law, 2028", TDH reports.

As noted in the congratulatory message, the resolution, initiated by Turkmenistan, was unanimously adopted at the 106th plenary meeting of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. The document was co-sponsored by 78 states.

The initiative to declare 2028 the Year of International Law was announced by the President of Turkmenistan in September 2025 at the plenary session of the 80th anniversary session of the General Assembly. According to the author of the congratulatory message, the proposal is aimed at increasing respect for international law, strengthening peace and security, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The message emphasizes that Turkmenistan has been a full member of the UN since 1992 and has received international recognition of its permanent neutrality three times. The country has repeatedly served as Vice-President of the General Assembly and is a member of several commissions, committees, and councils of the organization. In total, at the initiative of Turkmenistan, the UN General Assembly adopted more than 30 resolutions aimed at ensuring peace and security, as well as implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

According to a special plan for the preparation and implementation of the Year of International Law, Turkmenistan plans to implement measures to strengthen the international legal framework and improve the effectiveness of the implementation of UN conventions, treaties, and agreements.
