Turkmenistan's demographic scenarios for the period up to 2050 were discussed in Ashgabat

From July 27 to 29, 2026, a working meeting was held at the UN building in Ashgabat to discuss the draft National Strategy for Demographic Sustainability of Turkmenistan. The event was organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Office in Turkmenistan within the framework of the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework between the Government of Turkmenistan and the United Nations for 2026–2030, as well as the UNFPA country programme for the same period.

The meeting was attended by representatives of key government agencies, including the Ministry of Education, the State Statistics Committee, the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, as well as the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Turkmenistan and the Union of Economists.

Participants were introduced to a scenario-based forecast for the country's population development through 2050. They also examined an analysis of current demographic trends, population structure, human capital development, and the participation of youth and women in the economy.

Particular attention was paid to assessing the impact of demographic changes on the education, healthcare, social protection and labour market systems.

Following the three-day meeting, the participants agreed on the key provisions of the draft National Strategy, its key indicators, and institutional mechanisms for interagency coordination, and identified further steps for finalizing the document.

The meeting was moderated by UNFPA International Consultant Elena Zolotova.
