The Spanish national team defeated Argentina in the World Cup final and won the tournament for the second time.

The match took place in New York on Sunday and ended in a 1–0 victory for the Spaniards in extra time. Ferran Torres scored the only goal in the 106th minute. During stoppage time at the end of the second half, Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card and was sent off.

The Spanish national team played in the World Cup final for the second time and secured its second victory; "La Roja" had previously won gold in 2010. Spain has now equaled France and Uruguay in the number of titles (two wins each). Brazil holds the record (five championships), followed by Italy and Germany (four each) and Argentina (three).

The Argentina national team, having relinquished the title of defending champion, played in the final for the seventh time in its history. The "Albiceleste" have three championship titles and four defeats in decisive matches to their name.

The World Cup took place from June 11 to July 19. For the first time, 48 teams participated in the tournament, and matches were held across three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The next World Cup, taking place in the centenary year of the inaugural tournament, will be hosted by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal. The tournament's opening three matches will be held in Argentina, Uruguay—which hosted the inaugural championship in 1930—and Paraguay. Spain will become the first country to host the World Cup as the defending champion.
