Where should Turkmen citizens apply for a visa to the Schengen area

The Schengen Area comprises 29 countries – 25 EU countries (excluding Ireland and Cyprus) and four non-EU countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. A single visa allows travelers to stay in any of these countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Citizens of Turkmenistan can apply for this visa through two diplomatic missions located directly in Ashgabat – the embassies of Germany and Italy. Other Schengen states do not have their own consular offices in the country.

The German Embassy in Ashgabat offers visas to:

Germany, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Estonia, Spain, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Finland, and Sweden. The embassy also processes Swiss visas separately for holders of Turkmen service and diplomatic passports. Document submission appointments are made exclusively through the embassy's online appointment system.

The Italian Embassy in Ashgabat offers visas to:

Italy, as well as short-term (up to 90 days) Schengen visas to France. Although there is a separate French embassy in Ashgabat, applications for short-term French visas for Turkmen citizens are accepted by the consular section of the Italian Embassy. Long-term visas to France, as well as visas to the country's overseas territories, are processed through the VFS Global service center in Istanbul. Appointments are available through the Prenot@mi portal (prenotami.esteri.it), 24/7 and free of charge.

The Romanian Embassy in Ashgabat is worth a special mention:

Since 2024, Romania has been a member of the Schengen Area and issues uniform Schengen visas, so you can also apply for a visa to this country directly in the Turkmen capital.

Countries for which visas cannot be obtained in Ashgabat:

Bulgaria, Hungary, Denmark, Iceland, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland – for holders of regular (non-service/diplomatic) passports. To travel to these countries, applicants must contact the consulates of the respective countries outside of Turkmenistan – typically, these are the closest representative offices in the region. For example, Poland's consular jurisdiction over Turkmenistan is vested in the embassy in Baku, and some consular services are also provided through the representative office in Tashkent. The exact location for submitting documents varies from country to country, so before traveling, it is recommended to check the current procedure on the official website of the embassy of the desired country.
