Audi to ditch touchscreens in favor of physical buttons in new models

Audi will revise its vehicle interior design concept over the next two years; this was confirmed to the publication GoAuto by the company's technical director, Oliver Hoffmann.

According to Mohr, the automaker will move away from an "excessive" number of touchscreens in the interior. The company intends to bring back physical controls—buttons and switches—which Mohr described as "part of the brand's DNA." In doing so, Audi hopes to restore qualities historically associated with the automaker.

The third-generation Q7 crossover will be the last model designed according to the previous concept, featuring an abundance of touchscreens.

The first vehicles to feature the updated approach to interior design will be the production version of the sports car based on the Concept C, the Nuvolari supercar, the Q7 e-tron electric crossover, and the A4 e-tron sedan and estate.

In addition to moving away from an excessive number of screens, the company intends to place greater emphasis on tactile feel and the quality of trim materials. Specifically, Audi plans to adhere to the principle that any component appearing to be metal must actually be made of metal.
