On July 7, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations Vepa Hajiyev spoke at a special event, “The UN Decade of Sustainable Transport – Annual Review,” held at UN Headquarters in New York as part of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
The event, co-organised by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), brought together representatives of Member States, UN agencies and experts to discuss the role of sustainable transport in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
In his speech, the Permanent Representative recalled that Turkmenistan initiated the UN General Assembly resolution proclaiming the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport for 2026–2035. He emphasized that sustainable transport is a key factor in economic growth, regional integration, trade, access to energy resources, and social inclusiveness.
The Turkmen side also noted the importance of a comprehensive transport policy, sustainable infrastructure, digital transformation, support for landlocked developing countries, and the practical implementation of the Awaza Action Plan.
Participants at the event noted the timeliness and significance of the President of Turkmenistan's initiative to create a Transport Sustainability Atlas—a data-driven tool designed to facilitate monitoring, knowledge sharing, and practical action within the Decade.
The Turkmen side confirmed its readiness for further cooperation with UN DESA, UN regional commissions, Member States and partners to ensure the successful implementation of the Decade.
During the visit, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan also held a meeting with the head of the Global Centre for Innovation and Knowledge in Sustainable Transport. During the meeting, the parties discussed cooperation issues, in particular in the context of jointly organizing an event to be held on July 8 entitled "Advancing the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035): Partnerships, Data-Driven Solutions and Coordinated Action to Accelerate the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda."

The parties also exchanged views on strengthening systemic cooperation to support the successful implementation of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport 2026–2035.
