Study: More than half of TikTok's videos are created using AI

Kawping published the results of a study on the prevalence of AI-powered content in TikTok's recommendation feed. According to the findings, 59% of videos seen by new users in the "For You" section of the platform were created using AI tools.

During the study, journalists analyzed 10 thousand videos—500 publications in each of the platform's 20 most popular thematic sections.

The highest concentration of AI content was found in the children's video category: according to the researchers, 57% of videos in this section were created using neural networks. The top three categories also included "Science and Education" (35%) and "Health" (33,8%).

The least susceptible sections were those related to music, fitness, and fashion: in each of them, the share of such materials did not exceed 2%.

The authors of the study use the term "AI-slop" to describe videos that, in their opinion, are characterized by low production quality, formulaic scripts, and primitive visuals. However, the researchers caution that this definition is subjective and does not represent a generally accepted industry standard.
