The “Moskvich” automobile plant intends to launch production of its first hybrid vehicle under its own brand in 2027. This was announced by the company's CEO, Elena Frolova, at the 2026 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), without specifying the segment or other technical details of the future model, according to kommersant.ru.
According to Frolova, the company is targeting the mass-premium segment, on par with brands like Haval and Geely. The hybrid will be more expensive than a car with an internal combustion engine, but she estimates the cost will remain reasonable due to the smaller battery size compared to electric vehicles. The company does not claim to be the cheapest hybrid on the market.
A potential development partner for the new model could be the Chinese concern SAIC, which already has a number of hybrid models in its portfolio. Collaboration with its previous partner, JAC Motors, has become complicated: in particular, the “Moskvich 5” crossover project, which was considered for a hybrid model, was cancelled.
Interest in hybrid vehicles is growing among other manufacturers as well. AvtoVAZ announced the development of a hybrid version of the Lada Azimut, Aurus unveiled the hybrid Senat at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, and Hongqi plans to launch the hybrid HS6 on the Russian market in 2027.
According to “Avtostat”, sales of new hybrids in Russia in the first four months of 2026 increased 2,3-fold compared to the same period last year, reaching 19,600 units. Their share of total sales exceeded 5%. Voyah, Evolute, Geely, GAC, and Lixiang remain the segment leaders. Conversely, “Moskvich” sales in the first quarter decreased by 25,6%, to 2,7 units.
