Thailand tightens travel restrictions for foreign tourists

Thai authorities intend to reduce the maximum visa-free stay in the country from 60 to 30 days and tighten immigration controls at the border. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew, according to TASS.

According to him, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been reviewing visa policy issues for several months. The current 60-day visa-free regime, with a single 30-day extension, has been deemed excessive: authorities believe it opens the door to abuse by those not intending to travel. The Foreign Minister emphasized that the tightening of measures is not directed against citizens of any specific country, but that the authorities intend to "be strict with those engaged in undesirable activities," primarily in matters of security. Furthermore, they plan to strengthen checks to ensure that the actual purposes of entry comply with the conditions of the issued visas.

Earlier, in April, during a presentation of Thailand's foreign policy concept, Phuangketkeu announced a reduction in the visa-free period, in part as a measure to combat online fraud.

The current regime was introduced in July 2024, when the Thai government approved a decree granting 60-day visa-free entry to visitors from 93 countries and territories. Effective May 1, 2025, all travelers entering the kingdom are also required to obtain a TDAC (Thai Arrival Card) in advance—at least three days before arrival—on the country's immigration portal.

Citizens of Turkmenistan must obtain a tourist visa in advance to visit the Kingdom of Thailand. This can be obtained through the Kingdom's embassy or consulate, or online through the official portal thaievisa.go.th.
