South Korea has launched free mobile internet access for all residents. From now on, the connection will not be disconnected after the paid data plan is used up; speed will be limited to 400 kbps. This change will affect over 7 million subscribers, according to ixbt.com.
The initiative was supported by the country's three largest operators: SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus. The Ministry of Science and Information Technology explained that access to online services has become a basic necessity for citizens, which was the main reason for this decision.
The reform went beyond introducing a minimum tariff. Operators also promised to launch affordable 5G plans priced at up to 20,000 won (approximately 13,5 USD), expand data and voice packages for senior users, and improve Wi-Fi coverage on subways and intercity trains.
