A 19-year-old student has become France's youngest mayor

During the municipal elections in France, residents of the commune of Nomexy in the Vosges department elected 19-year-old Yann Traeteur as mayor, becoming the youngest mayor in the country, reports linfo.re.

Tretör won in the first round, receiving 50,23% of the votes and beating the incumbent mayor, Martin Buja, who had held the post for several years, by just five votes – 405 to 400.

Despite his young age, the new mayor of this commune of approximately 1,900 people near Epinal has been involved in politics for many years: he trained as a parliamentary assistant and was actively involved in public life. By his own admission, Traeteur's interest in politics began at age 11, and by 15, he had already joined a party.

He is currently a second-year political science student at Mulhouse and intends to combine his studies with his duties as mayor, having requested special student-deputy status to complete part of his courses remotely.

When asked about the reaction of residents, Treter noted that people were pleased to see young people involved in politics and appreciated his emphasis on the closeness of power to citizens.

In France, the minimum voting age is 18. Jan Treter's victory attracted widespread attention in the country and sparked a debate about the role of young people in local government.
