Georgia has banned the sale of single-use plastic tableware

Georgia has banned the sale of single-use plastic tableware and food containers since April 1, 2026, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

The ban applies to plastic forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks, plates, straws, and stirrers, as well as expanded polystyrene containers, lids, and cups. The import and production of these products was previously banned, effective January 1 of this year.

Government agencies are now prohibited from purchasing plastic tableware and beverages in bottles up to 3 liters. An exception is made only for military procurement.

Violations of these requirements are punishable by a fine of 1,000 lari (approximately 370 USD) and confiscation of the goods; for repeat violations, the fine increases to 2,000 lari.

The export of plastic products is not prohibited, but manufacturers are required to notify authorities in advance of such shipments.
