Turkmenistan has put forward an initiative to hold a summit of the heads of Caspian states to discuss current issues in the region and to intensify work to ensure environmental security in the Caspian Sea. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan following talks between Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Russian diplomat Sergei Lavrov.
As noted in the statement of the Foreign Ministry, at the meeting, special attention was paid to the development of five-sided cooperation in the Caspian region. Rashid Meredov emphasized the need for coordinated cooperation between the coastal states.
The parties noted the importance of completing work on draft agreements in this area as soon as possible. Turkmenistan and Russia agreed to continue an active dialogue on Caspian issues.
Lavrov was on an official visit to Ashgabat on June 24-25. The Russian Foreign Minister last visited Turkmenistan in 2022.
