Galina Mamedova, a resident of besieged Leningrad who lives in Ashgabat, celebrated her 81st birthday. Russian diplomats in Turkmenistan visited the birthday girl to personally congratulate her on this significant event. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Embassy in Turkmenistan.

Galina Mamedova is one of two Ashgabat residents who survived the Leningrad siege. In January of this year, she was awarded the honorary badge “In honor of the 80th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the fascist siege”, which was presented to her by the Governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Beglov.

The second resident of Ashgabat to survive the blockade is Maria Avanesova, who was evacuated from Leningrad in August 1942.

The breakthrough of the blockade on January 18, 1943 permitted the city to reconnect with the rest of the country and begin the restoration of the city's economy. Today, the Day of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the fascist blockade is celebrated annually in St. Petersburg as the Day of Leningrad Victory, symbolizing the courage and fortitude of the city's residents.
