In Auckland, New Zealand, a court sentenced a local woman for cruelty to an animal. A woman has been jailed for two months for causing her dog to die by over-feeding it. This is reported by daily.afisha.ru with reference to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
The incident occurred in October 2021, when police found a dog named Nuggi in critical condition during a search. The animal weighed almost 54 kg and had difficulty moving. Veterinarians were unable to listen to a heartbeat due to excessive fat deposits.
Todd Westwood, director of the local SPCA, said Nuggi was one of the most obese animals they had ever encountered. The dog was diagnosed with conjunctivitis, skin problems and excessively long nails.
Despite the efforts of veterinarians who managed to reduce Nuggi's weight by almost 9 kg, the dog died from complications caused by obesity. The autopsy also revealed previously undiagnosed liver and endocrine diseases.
In addition to the prison sentence, Nuggi's former owner was fined 1200 USD and banned from owning dogs for a year.
