The project of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) “Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Development of Green Cities in Ashgabat and Avaza” celebrates World Environment Day with a series of presentations and events.

Project specialists made presentations at several events held from June 4 to June 12. Among them: the International Conference “Architecture - Man-made Art in Construction”, organized by the Turkmen State Institute of Architecture and Construction of the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, as well as a lecture at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

Project specialists will also take part in an event that will be organized by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Ashgabat on June 12. The purpose of this event is to draw attention to the positive results of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the transfer of chairmanship to Azerbaijan, which will host COP29 in Baku this November, as well as to explore ways to involve youth in the process decisions on COP29.

Presentations covered a wide range of topics, including the role of a reliable and sustainable energy system in achieving sustainable urban development, improving the regulatory framework for renewable energy and energy efficiency, sustainable development and smart cities, sustainable transport, waste management, the role of youth in the fight against climate change, as well as building an inclusive and sustainable future for Turkmenistan.

The project “Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Development of Green Cities in Ashgabat and Avaza”, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and UNDP, aims to promote the development of sustainable cities and reduce the negative impacts of urban growth in the country.

Practical measures implemented and planned by the UNDP project in Turkmenistan are aimed at developing the use of renewable energy and introducing innovative energy efficiency technologies into the electricity industry. These steps help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help the country meet its international obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement.
