The largest coronal hole in the history of the solar cycle formed on the Sun on December 2. Its width was 800 thousand kilometers, which is more than 60 times the diameter of the Earth. This gap is directed directly at the Earth and spews out powerful streams of cosmic wind, Mail.ru writes with reference to Spaceweather.com.
Coronal holes are regions of the solar corona with reduced density and temperature. They are formed when there is a change in the magnetic fields of the Sun, as a result of which part of the stellar matter is carried away into space.
Solar activity increases as our star approaches the peak of its 11-year cycle. Coronal holes can occur at any time during the cycle. Scientists are surprised that the new hole is located near the equator, since they usually appear near the poles of the Sun.
